The book picks up where the films leave off, serving as both a reflection and a complement, while also creating a new narrative. It brings together hundreds of archival materials from photo albums, unique and invaluable oral histories, creative writings, and interviews with scholars. During nearly a year of editing, we were eager to revisit 20th-century San Francisco and Cuba, tracing history through the neon lights of Chinatown and the echoes of Cantonese opera. For the dancers and performers documented in this book, their bodies act as living archives; their memories and unspoken emotions may be hidden in their steps, fingers, and gazes. Furthermore, the design duo Studio Pianpian He and Max Harvey transformed the books into a repository of collective memory through their design. They used papers of various colors to distinguish the different sources of the oral history. The designers delicately captured period-marked visual elements from the archive, infusing the book with a new charm based on the aesthetics of the last century.

334 pages

25.7 × 18.5 cm

Text in English and Japanese.
