Photography in Parallel: Japanese and Western Critical Perspectives Since the 1960s* brings together two previously unpublished essays, commissioned specifically for this volume from critics Takanao Seki and Megumu Takashima, along with five highly significant historical texts selected by Miyuki Endo and Gen Umezu. Originally published from the 1960s onward and now translated into English, these writings by critics such as Toshiaki Minemura and Yusuke Nakahara examine how photography in Japan has been addressed in relation to painting, sculpture, printmaking, and other art forms. Far from presenting these historical texts as static records of past debates, this volume reconsiders them in light of contemporary practice.
