Roots to Fruits is a magazine about music, origins, and cultural resistance. This inaugural issue explores Ghanaian highlife as a driving force in the struggle for independence and the construction of African identity under Kwame Nkrumah.
Dele Adeyemo examines how highlife—an evolution of the “work song”—reshaped urban space in Ghana, from the new cities to the port of Tema. Mirelle rounds out the issue with a visual essay that brings together archives from the Wereldmuseum and the Royal Tropical Institute, revealing connections between sound, geography, and political power.
