The twelfth issue, aptly titled Closing, marks the end of the journey in magazine format. Instead of presenting a conventional compilation of the best or promising new beginnings, we have chosen to delve into the topic of Closing with all its nuances. This issue is not simply a farewell to Whitelies in magazine form: it is an opportunity for us to uphold our commitments and values at the highest level. It goes beyond simply being goodbye: it is a visual expression of the beauty of closure, a celebration of farewell and an embrace of states of mourning.
This deeply personal issue concludes twelve chapters dedicated to our longtime collaborators and artists. Lena C. Emery presents us with a story taken from an excerpt from her upcoming book “I Got Naked to Climb a Tree” (2024). Olivier Kervern immortalizes past moments. Stanislas Motz-Neidhart captures Sahteene Sednaoui in a story rich in symbolism. Stéphane Sednaoui, for his part, has contributed to a personal and tragic series titled “Sombre” (2023). In our ongoing collaboration with CHANEL, we focus on the Fall-Winter 2023/24 Haute Couture collection, a presentation that unfolded with Chanel artistic director Virginie Viard's portrait of quiet Parisian life along the Seine in summer.
Osamu Yokonami engages with the loneliness, anonymity, and restlessness that characterize sprawling megametropolises. Beyond the frenetic heart of Tokyo, Jun Yasui has created a story inspired by the concept of Sanzu-no-Kawa. Robert Mapplethorpe printer Tom Baril graces this issue with his "Botanic" series. In these images, he celebrates the transient and ephemeral qualities that both life and nature share. Photographer Mengyu Zhou offers a look at her personal series “The Filial Daughter,” captured earlier this year in her hometown of Wenzhou, China, while Belgian artist Katrien de Blauwer appears in Whitelies once again with a series of her distinctive collages, selected from his largest. body of work “Why I fear red, love blue (and) hate yellow” (2022).
