THE SOUND DESIGN OF VALENCIA

In the early 1980s, a subculture flourished in Valencia that, in its journey from the purest underground to its consolidation as a mass phenomenon, would end up generating significant repercussions at a national level. We are talking about what was known on the street as bacalao.

Far-reaching sociopolitical issues created a stigma that, for decades, conditioned everything related to this movement, to the point of obscuring, in many cases, the richness and exuberance of the artistic dynamics it generated. While the musical aspects are part of the collective imagination, the accompanying graphic design has remained largely hidden… until now.

Graphic Route. The sound design of Valencia recovers this entire universe, placing it in context and giving it a value that had been neglected until now. It was the spontaneous genesis of a particular aesthetic that, spurred on by the vital outpouring that followed the end of the dictatorship, decisively influenced several generations. Elisa Ayala, Paco Bascuñán, Quique Company, Sento Llobell, Ramón Marcos, Edu Marín, Pablo Mira, Paco Roca, Armando Silvestre… are just some of the artists who appear in these pages, largely responsible for giving visual form to the yearning for freedom of that endless night.
