The Japanese word "mingei" literally translates to "crafts of the people" and emerged from discussions about beauty in functional objects between philosopher Yanagi Soetsu (1889-1961) and potters Kawai Kanjiro (1890-1966) and Hamada Shoji (1894-1978) during a research trip in 1925. To mark the centenary of the term's creation, this catalog for a special exhibition presents a selection of works by artisans and artists who propelled the "mingei" movement. Additionally, it re-examines the close relationship between Kyoto and "mingei" through the works and materials of its creators and promoters, including ceramics, textiles, lacquerware, and wood.
