The book Double accompanies Carol Newhouse and Carmen Winant’s exhibition at Les Rencontres d’Arles in 2025. Through her exploration of radical reinvention, particularly within the lesbian separatist communities of the 1970s, Carmen Winant connected with Carol Newhouse, co-founder of WomanShare. Over the course of a year, they engaged in a photographic dialogue: one shot a roll of film, mailed it across the country, and the other re-exposed it using double exposure. This technique, employed by Carol and her comrades, challenged the singularity of images and the claim of a solitary (often male) creator. Double invites us to consider how we reinvent ourselves and our stories through shared self-representation and interconnectedness. Drawing on Newhouse’s archive, their work shapes intergenerational relationships and feminist legacies, bringing experimental photographic practices from the past into the present. The book stands as a testament to her recovery of feminist photographic strategies.

Should you be unsatisfied with your purchase, you can return the product within the first month. Please note that the cost of return shipping falls under your responsibility.
For in-store returns, we provide a refund in the form of a gift voucher. However, for online purchases, we issue a direct refund given that not being able to physically see the product does have its limitations.
