In her later years, Conchita, Marta's grandmother, fondly remembered her childhood in Larache, a fishing village south of Tangier. And she would talk about harira, a soup her granddaughter never got to taste in that house. The anecdote could have ended there, but Marta wanted to pull the thread and extend the conversation into a universe of characters as fictional as they were recognizable.

With twists and turns, this novel explores different lives that intersect between Zaragoza, the rural world, and the memory of Morocco. Chickpea Skin explores family, identity, secrets, and ways of being in the world. And it does so from a sarcastic and everyday perspective that places cooking as a narrative vehicle.
