Protest is a fundamental human act against injustice. It takes many forms: the defiant act of existing, organized crowd resistance, armed struggles, and the disruption of systems through words, actions, and refusal—in person, in online posts and slogans, or in the streets. Some forms of protest require specific symbols, flags, and clothing, while others are carried out through nonverbal communication, clandestine dissemination, and ideological discipline. Yet all of them need cultural carriers: our bodies, our histories, and our traces, to hold what can be remembered and learned from them. Whether explicitly or invisibly, in communities or in solitude, this issue explores why and how we protest, hoping to generate solace, solidarity, and action.
In this issue:
Maya Saikali talks with Gérard Paris-Clavel, co-founder of the pioneering Grapus Collective, about the creation of political images and the life of the image. Gérard delves into his own work and where he stands: "I don't do exhibitions, I do demonstrations."
An illustrated set of tools for action, from Palestine Action, puts direct action tactics within reach of anyone willing to confront the international system complicit in the Palestinian genocide.
Two conversations by Maya Moumne: with Kalle Lasn, founder of Adbusters Magazine, about the power of artists in revolutions, and with Ahmad Swaid, editor of Dazed MENA and former editor-in-chief of GQ Middle East, about censorship, identity and the creation of new cultural platforms in the region.
Meanwhile, Audrey Tseng and Chong Gu write about Red Canary Song, a grassroots collective of Asian and migrant sex workers, masseuses, and allies from the Asian diaspora, who resist police surveillance through the notion of domestic chores.
These highlights are accompanied by stellar contributions from Alina Lupu, Ahmad Zaghmouri, Muhannad Hariri, Elias Erkan, Bettina Nagler, Rasha Dakkak, Yaa Adae and Nihal ElAasar.
And for the first time: another magazine within this magazine: Design Drafts #3, a collaboration with Nieuwe Instituut, on protest and design, with contributions from Tala Abdalhadi, Myriam Amri, Shruti Hussain, Candice Jensen and Alice Wan on the theme of protest and design.
