Our bodies are designed to sit, but do we design seating in the same way? Has modern design colonized our understanding of sitting? And how is the diverse sociocultural act of sitting reflected in this functional product?
By observing and analyzing social and cultural differences through chairs from eight cultures in the world's most populous countries, Sicilian designer Matteo Guarnaccia conducted field research to portray each country, collaborating with selected local design studios to situate each cultural context within the form of a chair. This project diversifies the seemingly mundane aspects of chair culture and design, opening up a conversation about identity, community, and a divided reality—an expression of both global and local convergence through chairs.
Matteo Guarnaccia is a Sicilian designer based in Europe. After studying design in Barcelona, he gained work experience in Los Angeles and Madrid. His immersion in an artistic environment allowed him to broaden his perspectives and ideas across various artistic fields, including graphic design and music. Numerous travel experiences have given Matteo a wider understanding of his surroundings, motivating him to learn from any new information. A firm believer in the importance of problem-solving, he utilizes a variety of communication tools to deliver solutions, which may seem small but ultimately make a significant difference with a broader impact. Currently, Matteo offers his creative services, from graphic design projects to product development, only when truly necessary, all the while continuing to learn and find joy in his work. Matteo is happy to have worked and collaborated with Tate Modern Exchange, CERN, Kvadrat China, Curro Claret, The Institute for PostNatural Studies, The Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro-Brazil, The National Gallery of Modern Art of Mumbai-India, Archivo y Arquitectura Ciudad de México-Mexico, the Macan Museum of Jakarta-Indonesia, the African Artists Foundation in Lagos-Nigeria and many more.
