A new collection of beautiful and unique jazz record designs from the 1960s to 1980s.

Just over fifteen years ago, Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records) published the first edition of *Freedom, Rhythm and Sound*: a unique collection showcasing the stunning artwork of self-released jazz album covers from the 1960s and 1970s by radical jazz musicians such as Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, and others. The artwork for their covers, often self-produced during this period, reflected their radical agenda, spiritual awareness, and singular pursuit of musical and personal freedoms.

Freedom, Rhythm and Sound: CHAPTER TWO is a second collection featuring hundreds more beautiful and unique jazz album cover designs from the 1960s to the 1980s. These designs help document the ongoing developments in jazz as African American artists embarked on new paths and journeys toward enlightenment, exploring Europe, Japan, Africa, and other places where enthusiastic audiences gave them new respect and where local producers and record labels were eager to record their innovative and radical music.

Through stunning album cover designs, Freedom, Rhythm and Sound: Chapter Two serves as a visual record of this period. In addition to the radical jazz of the era, the book also includes sections on covers by African American poets, recordings of speeches by Civil Rights activists (Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X), and pioneers (Yusef Lateef, Max Roach, Ornette Coleman, and others), all of whom helped influence and shape the world of radical jazz from the 1960s onward.
